This classic WORK ON the nature of early Islamic art has now been brought up to date in order to take into consideration material that has recently come to light. In a new chapter, Oleg Grabar develops alternate models for the formation of Islamic art, tightens its chronology, and discusses its implications for the contemporary art of the Muslim world. Reviews of the first edition: "Grabar examines the possible ramifications of sociological, economic, historical, psychological, ecological, and archaeological influences upon the art of Islam...[He] explains that Islamic art is woven from the threads of an Eastern, Oriental tradition and the hardy, surviving strands of Classical style, and [he] illustrates this web by means of a variety of convincing and well-chosen examples."-Art Bulletin "A book of absorbing interest and immense erudition...All Islamic archaeologists and scholars will thank Professor Grabar for a profound and original study of an immense and complex field, which may provoke controversy but must impress by its mastery and charm by its modesty." -Times Literary Supplement "Oleg Grabar, in this book of exceptional subtlety and taste, surveys and extends his own important contributions to the study of early Islamic art history and WORKS OUT an original and imaginative approach to the elusive and complex problems of understanding Islamic art.

Islamic glassmakers were not only brilliant technicians and innovators in their own right, but they also preserved many of the methods of Late Antique Roman craftsmen, passing them on centuries later to Venetian and other European masters. This lovely book is the first comprehensive study of the accomplishments of these artisans. The volume presents glass objects from collections throughout the world - from perfume flasks to pitchers, mosque lanterns to boxes, inkwells to vases - ranging from the seventh to the nineteenth century and through many of the major artistic centres of the Muslim world. Five introductory essays cover all facets of the subject, including historical background, archacological excavations, issues of connoisseurship, technology and science. The authors then discuss 150 masterworks of Islamic glass, grouped by technique or type of decoration (blown, mould-blown, hot-worked, mosaic, painted, cut, and engraved) each of which is illustrated in full colour. Examples of European glass objects are also included as illuminating reference points. The book is the catalogue of an exhibition that opens at the Corning Museum of Glass in May 2001 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in October 2001.

Between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, the Deccan stood at the crossroads of far-reaching commercial and diplomatic networks. It ranged from Arabia and Iran to East Asia and, increasingly, fell within the orbit of European colonial expansion. This resulted in an immensely rich visual culture in the region, shaped further by the dynamic encounters between the different versions of Islam patronized by the ruling dynasties of the period, and diverse local linguistic, religious and artistic traditions. This new book is the first richly illustrated and comprehensive exploration of the art of the late medieval and early modern Deccan. It explores the ways in which court art, artifacts and built environments were created and experienced, the reasons behind their creation, and the other agencies involved besides and beyond the court. This will be an invaluable resource for all interested in the visual culture of the Islamic world
